Intel processors compatible windows 7 xp mode

Although neither piece will be included in the Windows 7 box, XP Mode will be a free download for those who have a license to Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Enterprise, or Windows 7 Ultimate. Bott lists Intel desktop and mobile processors that will and will not support XP Mode here and here , respectively. Intel mobile processors may be the most problematic in supporting XP mode; not because of the raw numbers--most newer Intel mobile processors do, in fact, support Intel Virtualization Technology--but because a disproportionate number of those that do not have VT and therefore don't support XP mode are laptops sold at retail.

And, undoubtedly, some small businesses purchase laptops at retail. And this can be confirmed on Intel's Web site. The point? To state the obvious, consumers will have to verify which processor their laptop has.

But this hasn't been true for some time, and now VT is the way to go if you're rolling out a new xbased virtualization package, like Microsoft's hyper-V or Virtual Iron's software. For more on the issue of performance and VT versus binary translation, see this thread , where some Intel and VMware folks go a few rounds on the topic.

I don't know the answer to this, nor do I know why Intel doesn't include VT support across its entire lineup. As you can see, quite a few users won't be able to use XPM when Windows 7 comes out, especially on the corporate desktop, where many companies have opted for cheaper, non-VT parts. That's my fault for not reading closely enough.

I actually do know why—it's just that it's a really boneheaded move on Intel's part. That figures to make the landscape even more confusing, with some CPUs having VT support or not depending on the revision number.

For the background on this issue, see page 1. Find your CPU model under its family, and then look in the column to the right. Disclaimer: I believe this information is accurate, but it is possible that some mistakes may be present in the following tables.
